In addition to great general game, and their attendant predators, endemic subspecies of giraffe and wildebeest are found in the Luangwa, while enormous herds of black lechwe inhabit the floodplains of the Bangweulu. Birdlife is particularly prolific, with 740 bird species found here, including many specials; it is the southernmost extreme of the bizarre-looking African Shoebill's range for example and one of the best places to see this sought-after species.

Zambia is also known as the birthplace of classic African walking safaris – where you leave the four-wheel drive vehicles behind, and head out into the wilds on foot, in the company of some of the very best rangers and guides on the continent. The experience of the bush from ground level, is truly exhilarating and a not to be missed element of a safari there.

Behind the scenes, the logistics of running a first class safari operation in remote Zambia are hugely challenging. In a number of areas camps can only open for a limited number of months a year – during the floods they need to be totally disassembled and packed away until the next season. In light of these operational challenges, what Wilderness Safaris achieves in their far off camps is truly incredible. The Bigger Picture

It’s very easy to fill up six nights on safari in Zambia. With Victoria Falls factored in, many clients do circuits of 8 nights or more.

A great way to wrap up an intense deep bush wildlife experience in Zambia is with some R&R time on the beach – in neighboring Malawai. Lake Malawi is one of Africa’s largest fresh water lakes – and offers some truly exceptional snorkeling and diving, an incredibly relaxing pace of life, and some beautiful little lakeshore hideaways where you can truly unwind and get away from it all.

Both the Zambian capital, Lusaka, and Livingstone (Victoria Falls) are served by daily flights to/from Johannesburg. Connecting flights to Malawi are easy to arrange.
