The Appeal

With the express aim of funding local community development, ecosystem preservation and wildlife protection from its luxury lodges Singita Grumeti Reserves is an impressive tourism project in every sense.

Bordering the Serengeti National Park, with a prime location on the celebrated great migration route, the Reserves cover a phenomenal 350,000 acres of remote wilderness. This is an area equivalent in size to Kenya’s Masaai Mara National Park, and yet Singita Grumeti invites only 53 guests to experience its wilds at any one time – this exclusivity is unquestionably a most precious privilege.

A magnificent diversity of both resident and transient mammals and birds can be seen within the Reserves, with thirty species of herbivores, two dozen large carnivore species and five hundred species of birds gracing the wildlife lists on the properties. For many it is this multiplicity of wildlife that is the Serengeti’s great draw. Singita Grumeti’s three camps are positioned to take full advantage of their habitat preferences and a combination of the camps makes for phenomenal sighting opportunities: the elephants regularly seek tasty pods on Sasakwa Hill, the cheetah hunt the wide open plains surrounding Sabora whilst the Faru Faru waterhole entices thirsty antelope.

Aside from location, the lodges themselves differ immensely in character. From the height of organic, contemporary chic at Frau Faru’s riverine site, through the Campaign era of classic safari at Sabora’s plains camp, to the polished luxury of Sasakwa’s hilltop perch, each is unique in appearance and atmosphere. Favorites vary as much as guests’ personalities but the levels of comfort, service and care remain constant across all three stunning lodges.

Attention to detail and style hark back to the ‘Golden Age’ of east African living: original antiques and paintings abound, crisp pillows are strewn with rose petals, delicious dinners are served on fine Wedgwood china and accompanied by vintage wines from Haut Brion and Lafitte poured into sparkling Stuart crystal glasses. Lively conversation with knowledgeable guides and staff lend depth to the experience whilst time alone allows for quiet contemplation of the enchanting surroundings and enormity of the conservation project.

Activities at all three lodges are wide ranging and essentially encompass the same options. Professionally guided game drives and walks are daily features; the excellent equestrian centre is home to sixteen horses and experienced riders can enjoy out-rides on the Serengeti plains; clay tennis courts (made from the disused termite mounds) are located at Sabora and Sasakwa, and spa treatments make a terrific post-safari relaxant. Fun options such as archery, lawn croquet, badminton, billiards, star-gazing safaris, mountain biking and hot-air ballooning are also available, and for guests at Sasakwa there is a small gym and yoga room.

The Bigger Picture

A stay at Singita Grumeti makes for a fantastic component of an East African Safari, but for most of our clients, it’s not their only destination.

Singita Grumeti works very well in conjunction with Nomad Tanzania’s camps (see our Nomad Tanzania special promotion), allowing for incredibly diverse Tanzania experiences when combined together properly. One could easily do a two week safari taking in both one of the Grumeti properties and Nomad’s Serengeti Safari Camp, and Nduara Loliondo, their unique camp, at the edge of the Serengeti, in the heart of Maasai tribal lands.

After an East African wildlife experience, a large majority of our clients head for the beach, either in Tanzania – in the Zanzibar archipelago, or in Northern Mozambique (See our Vamizi Island Special).

Contact Solaris for a tailormade East Africa safari which allows you to get the most out of all the special offers in the region.
